Polo is an international sport played in almost every country in Europe, from Czech Republic, France, Germany, and Spain—all fledging polo nations with newly-formed clubs and growing membership numbers. While the more established hubs naturally have the most prestigious clubs and internationally-important tournaments, the rest are steadily catching up.
One of its kind is the Copenhagen Polo Club. Established in 201, this club started with a small set up—a space at an equestrian facility for a few horses and both men and women polo players with summer activities only.
After a few years, the club has grown to have its own facility for polo with two arenas, two grass fields, more members, and more players—operating all-year-round. Additionally, their facility is in a private estate with a full plug-and-play service set up. Besides playing, you can also spend time with your family and friends admiring the magnificent seaside view they have.
Every polo player gets to experience an inclusive, welcoming, and social atmosphere. Just like Denmark, it’s very equal and harmonious. Club owner Christian Green and his partner Anu Vesterinen have consistently made sure that there is at least a 50/50 gender mix among the members. Currently, they have 14 women polo players with ages ranging from 8 to 46 years old.
During these trying times, the club still managed to organize their first polo match—and topped it off with a live concert. They also had their first arena polo sponsored spectator event in an equestrian stadium in Denmark’s second largest city, Aarhus.
Moving forward, Christian and Anu have big goals for their club. It includes having their first female coach, introducing the sport to a new location in Denmark, and hosting an international tournament.
Whether your interest in polo is as a player, an aspiring one, or a spectator, the Copenhagen Polo Club can truly provide something for everyone. The serenity and tranquility of the surroundings are in complete contrast to the speed and intensity of polo—and that simply makes it one of the most exciting sports in the world. Us women polo players will definitely have a great time in this warm and welcoming place!
