Here’s What It’s Like To Escape To Mongolia

I feel like I’m flying as the warm summer wind blows through my hair, my heart is close to bursting, and I am beaming from ear to ear. I’m in Mongolia riding a tiny horse whose gallop is so smooth I can enjoy every moment of the vast open plains of the steppe. I am free, uninhibited, and in a land far from modern-day worries like social media.

Mongolia has to be one of my favorite places in the world, especially as a horse lover. I have been taking groups here for many years and hope to do it for many more. It is wild, with no walls, fences, or man-made barriers to stop you. You can escape from life and feel totally at one with nature and your horse.

We often go to the Genghis Khan Polo Club, where luxury is never forgotten. The Gers have large double beds covered in cashmere and beautiful hand-painted furniture. The incredible ‘Mingmar’ cooks the food. The rest of the clan will look after you like family.

We spend our days playing polo or going on long rides across the steppe. When we aren’t with the horses, we kayak down the river, go for a relaxing massage, and try to learn more about the history of the Mongols in Karakorum, the ancient capital of Mongolia.

It has to be one of the most exciting places in the world to play polo. The tiny horses are trained for the sport—they are fun but agile, used to racing, and always ready to play. Here, you only play for the fun of the game, the honor of the victory, and the challenge of chasing down very talented Mongolian players.

In the evening, we enjoy pre-dinner drinks looking at the most magnificent views before enjoying the delicious food the ‘Mingmar’ has prepared. The conversations are fluid and energetic! People do not check Google for answers, so they have to rely on their knowledge and wits. The hours roll by and the wine keeps on flowing; it’s like time no longer exists. Mongolia is the only place in the world I found where time has no meaning. People just relax and enjoy each other’s company.

There is much talk these days about digital detoxes. This destination is one place where I have done this once, for two months. It’s not something I did intentionally; the absence of wifi made me. I couldn’t recommend it enough—imagine yourself not only escaping technology but getting to live and learn from the true nomads of this world while playing polo and riding horses all day long. Could you think of anything more magical than this right now?

COVID-19 is hard on us all, and for now, I look forward to a future where we can travel again safely. Next year, I hope that we will be able to escape and find some sanctuary—to places where we can help communities thrive, promote education, and share experiences.
