17 Questions is a feature series where we introduce different women polo players around the world. In this feature, we talked to Lynn Thompson Female Interscholastic Player of the Year awardee Lindsey Morris of Garrison Forest Polo. The young talent already has reached a handicap of 4 in Women’s Arena—a promising personality to look forward to in the world of polo.

1. Since when are you interested in horses?

“I have always loved horses. My sister and I begged our parents to let us take lessons at a nearby farm just so we could be around the horses and learn to ride.”

2. How did you get into polo?

I have been very fortunate to have a school that offers polo and riding right on campus. I started polo lessons with some friends in 4th grade and got hooked. 

3. Who is your first coach?

“Cindy Halle was my first coach, but there have been so many amazing women who have also taught me, such as Jenny Schwartz and Posey Obrect.”

4. Who are your heroes on the field?

It’s impossible to name a single person—there have been so many strong female players that have influenced me so much.”

5. What’s the best training tip you’ve ever received?

“No matter how repetitive or boring things get, keep working on specific skills until you master them.”

6. How do you bond with your horse?

“Spending time in the barn, going on trail rides, and even grooming allows me to bond with the horses I play.”

7. Best horse care tip?

“Know what you are feeding your horses. Quality hay and grain are so important to keep your horses strong and healthy.”

8. Who is your polo bestfriend?

“It’s so hard to pick a specific person, so I’d have to say all of my polo friends that I have met through GFS.”

9. Which position do you love playing the most in and why?

“In the arena, I love playing #3 so I can sit back and help organize my team.”

10. What is more important in a team: trust or communication? Why?

I think trust and communication are equally important in a team because communication is worthless if the trust isn’t there.”

11. What’s your ultimate must-have when playing?

“Starbucks. Having a hot drink before a game in the freezing cold or an iced latte in the summer is a must have for me.”

12. Would you rather play mixed or women’s polo? Why?

“I enjoy playing in fast and competitive games, whether they are mixed or only women.”

13. For you, what makes polo the best sport?

“I love how competitive it is and, of course, having horses as teammates makes it the best sport for me.”

14. What’s your best win throughout your career?

“Winning the Women’s Arena Open in 2020 has probably been the most rewarding win for me so far.”

15. What’s the worst polo misconception you’ve ever heard of?

“I always hear people say that you need to own a string of horses to play. But that is not true at all! I’ve never had any polo ponies of my own and I’ve still been able to succeed and have fun while playing unfamiliar horses.”

16. If you could live the life of one polo player for a day, who would it be and why?

“I would love to live the life of any highly rated female player for a day because having the chance to play against some of the best players and win would be so gratifying. Being able to ride their horses and play on the best fields in the world would also be a dream for me.”

17. Complete the sentence: “I love polo because ________.”

“I love polo because it has opened up so many opportunities for me and I have met amazing people through playing a sport I love.”
